Qualitative Evaluation of University Students’ Experience Delivering an Obesity Prevention Programme in Elementary Schools

Abstract

The Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH) programme is an accredited obesity prevention programme in the United States, teaching children about nutrition, physical activity, and screen time limits. This study aimed to evaluate the perceptions of undergraduate and graduate student leaders’ about their experience delivering the CATCH programme in elementary schools in Northern Illinois school districts during the 2019–2020 school year and its impact on their personal and professional skills and on programme participants. An email questionnaire was sent to eligible students. Grounded theory was used to analyze the students’ responses. Two researchers assigned codes to the data and identified themes. Twenty-one students responded (50% response rate). Six identified themes include “purpose of CATCH programme,” “school facilities and resources,” “university students experience with CATCH lessons and activities,” “benefits to university student,” “benefits to children and teachers,” and “identified weaknesses and suggested improvements to CATCH.” University students delivering the CATCH programme appreciated the opportunity to practice in a real-world setting, gained transferable professional skills, increased programme content knowledge, identified CATCH programme benefits/strengths, and planned to apply lessons learned to future practice.

Résumé

Le programme CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) est un programme de prévention de l’obésité reconnu aux États-Unis qui enseigne aux enfants des notions visant à améliorer la nutrition, à accroître l’activité physique et à limiter le temps d’écran. Cette étude visait à évaluer les perceptions de leaders étudiants de premier cycle et des cycles supérieurs sur leur expérience de l’application du programme CATCH dans des écoles primaires de districts scolaires du nord de l’Illinois au cours de l’année scolaire 2019-2020 et son impact sur leurs compétences personnelles et professionnelles et sur les participants au programme. Un questionnaire a été envoyé par courriel aux étudiants admissibles. La théorie ancrée dans la pratique a été utilisée pour analyser les réponses des étudiants. Deux chercheurs ont attribué des codes aux données et ont identifié des thèmes. Vingt et un étudiants ont répondu (taux de réponse de 50 %). Les six thèmes identifiés sont les suivants : but du programme CATCH, installations et ressources dans les écoles, expérience des étudiants universitaires avec les leçons et activités de CATCH, avantages pour les étudiants universitaires, avantages pour les enfants et les enseignants, et faiblesses identifiées et améliorations suggérées pour CATCH. Les étudiants universitaires qui ont appliqué le programme CATCH ont apprécié la possibilité de pratiquer dans un cadre réel, ont acquis des compétences professionnelles transférables, ont amélioré leurs connaissances du contenu du programme, ont identifié les avantages et les forces du programme CATCH et ont prévu d’appliquer les leçons apprises à leur future pratique.
